How to Make Perfume

You can make perfume either for the family or for yourself, to sell commercially or to gift a friend, but you're sure to find that making perfume is, in fact, a very easy task that you can do singly or with friends. Making a perfume is a whole lot of fun, besides also teaching you a few new things and making you feel good about creating something of value, great taste and intensely personal.

While creating a perfume, you need to first consider the kind of perfume you'd like to make and what it should smell like. For instance, the kind of perfume could be eau de cologne, after-shaves, perfume concentrates or anything else, while it could have a strong smell, or soft, sweet, manly or long-lasting or anything else.

If you've decided that, you can now go on to make a list of ingredients you're going to need and bear in mind the characteristics of the ingredients you might like to add to your recipe. Remember, while creating a perfume, experimentation is a big thing which leads to a unique result. In fact, if you are inexperienced in perfume making, your keenness to experiment can overcome a lack of knowledge or experience.

Secondly, you must know that there are three key ingredients to making a good perfume-essential oils that are extracted from various plants, pure grain alcohol and water. There are three types of oils that will influence the fragrance of your perfume over time. Of these, the base notes will be the fragrance that lingers longest on your skin, which is why it is added first.

The middle notes also influence the fragrance of the perfume for quite a long time, while the top notes give the perfume its specific scent when just applied. Lastly, the top notes are added to the mixture after the middle notes and could also be followed by another ingredient to bridge the fragrances. You should always mix the extracts in the same order as specified here and remember to use a sufficient and similar quantity of each type.

You can make your dream perfume with these essential oils:

Base notes: sandal wood, vanilla, cinnamon, mosses, lichens, ferns

Middle notes: lemongrass, geranium, neroli, ylang-ylang

Top notes: orchid, rose, bergamot, lavender, lemon, lime

Ingredients

Directions: First, mix 25 drops of essential oils comprising base, middle and top notes. As you add the oils, keep smelling them. Now, add a few drips of the bridge oil. Now, add 2.5 oz. of alcohol and shake it for a few minutes and then keep it as it is for the next 48 hours or a total of six weeks because the longer it sits, the stronger the fragrance. Add 2 tablespoons of spring water and stir it and pour it through a coffee filter and store it in a bottle.

Now your perfume is ready-all you have left to do is to give it a name. Go ahead, the world is waiting for your signature perfume.
